THE OBERAMMERGAU STORY

In the year 1633, when Oberammergau was in the grip of the black plague, the inhabitants took an oath that they would stage a performance of the bitter suffering of Jesus Christ every 10 years. The town was spared of death and in 1634 the people of the village fulfilled their oath for the first time.

In the year 2010 Oberammergau will be dominated by its Passion Play once again. For hundreds of years in spite of dangers and threats, the little town in the Ammer Valley has truly kept its solemn promise.

The actors who perform the passion, the instrumentalists who play the music, the seamstresses who individually design and make the costumes and even the ushers who show the many spectators to their seats, are all the people of Oberammergau, amateur volunteers who work together to carry on the 350 year tradition. Their preparation is both practical and spiritual.

No stage makeup is used requiring the actors to grow their hair and beards. No applause or photographs are allowed, for the people believe that the play is a prayer, an act of faith and worship that they wish to share with every visitor.

The performance follows the last hours of Jesus on earth, beginning with His entry into Jerusalem and ending with the Resurrection and Transfiguration. Each Passion Play experience begins at 9am and ends at approximately 5.30pm with a lunchbreak of about 3 hours.
