CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF SERVICE
Cardinal George Pell

Going on pilgrimage is an authentic and rich part of Christian tradition. Taking time out and embarking on a journey of faith can provide us with a prayerful opportunity to perceive what really matters for each one of us in life. Such experiences enable us to bring back to our communities a renewed sense of Christian hope and witness.

Harvest Pilgrimages has provided a significant opportunity to many Australian Catholics over the past twenty years. I thank them for their contribution so far and for their ongoing efforts, particularly for World Youth Day.

Leading four pilgrimages as chaplain with Harvest Pilgrimages has been an honour and a pleasure. The first was to Medjugorje and the Holy Land, the next two for World Youth Days in Rome for the Jubilee Year and Toronto in 2002, and finally the Pathways of St. Paul through Greece & Turkey.

The pilgrimages have been highlights of my life. I met wonderful people and have maintained many of those friendships. The pilgrimages themselves were times of deep prayer and personal spiritual discovery. The opportunities to visit so many sacred places and to be with people who wanted to pray and reflect and to discover the riches of places we visited brought many rich blessings. They have always been pilgrimages and not just holidays, they have been rich in insights and discoveries, journeys with God and with friends discovering and rejoicing in God’s blessings.

For over 16 years, we have been privileged to be involved with Harvest in pilgrimages to World Youth Days and World Meetings of Families. In addition to all the normal detailed planning, there are the constraints of huge international meetings, each with its own unpredictable logistical hurdles.

We have nothing but praise for Philip Ryall and his dedicated team for their wonderful care of our Australian pilgrims over these years. The Harvest team’s prime focus is the spiritual experience itself and all the necessary logistics blend seamlessly into that – warm, personalised care, attention to detail and the back up of like-minded overseas staff with their own local knowledge of pilgrimage sites.

All this comes from a strong belief in the spiritual value of pilgrimages and over 20 years of experience and well-researched planning. Making pilgrimages both culturally relevant and achievable in today’s society has been Harvest’s unique contribution to the Church in Australia.

Congratulations to Harvest Pilgrimages for facilitating faith experiences over twenty years. I well remember the excitement of the first pilgrimage and the enrichment it was to my fellow-pilgrims and to me. Well done, Harvest!

We praise and thank God for inspiring Philip Ryall to launch out into the deep and embark on a journey into the unknown. Why? Because his foresight has given thousands of people the opportunity to increase their love for Jesus and Mary on pilgrimages to Holy Places in many different countries.

We have had the privilege of leading pilgrimages to many Holy Shrines. Seeing the Grace of God working in peoples lives, both on the pilgrimage and after arriving home, is a cause of much joy and rejoicing.

So we praise and thank Harvest for their hard work, which has produced very good fruit for our Catholic Church "down under"
